Scandinavian Lotteries in the Eighteenth-Century

Lecture by Johanne Slettvoll Kristiansen (NTNU, Trondheim).

In 1771, a controversial lottery based on an Italian model (Lotto di Genova) was announced in Denmark-Norway and Sweden. Apart from the fact that the two Scandinavian realms introduced the lottery in the same year, there are few similarities between them. This talk will discuss some main aspects of the mostly unexplored early history of the lotto in Scandinavia. It argues that the two states’ contrasting political systems can account for some key differences between them, both in terms of the process of implementation and in the public response to the new lottery.
